Halo, the world’s first-ever design product made with Hypetex coloured carbon fibre, has won the 2015 Red Dot award for design.

Created by Michael Sodeau and produced entirely from Hypetex, the Halo chair received global recognition when it was launched during the London Design Festival in September. It was subsequently put forward for the Red Dot award and won over the 38-member jury for the prize in the furniture category.

Halo will be exhibited next at the designjunction shows in Milan and New York in April and May.

The idea behind the Halo chair was to design an object that could best define and present Hypetex, a high-tech composite material created by leading engineers from the world of Formula One.

Michael Sodeau sought to utilise the high-performance properties of Hypetex, which is lightweight, strong and visually dynamic. The result is a highly-refined yet pared-back design. Everything that makes up the chair is required and there are no extraneous elements.

He said: “The design for the chair follows a modernist approach in its simplicity, and combines a graphic circular silhouette. This minimalist pared-back design is possible through the strength, lightness and elegance of the Hypetex material.

“The contoured shape interacts perfectly with light creating vibrant refractions on the surface. When the chair is viewed from behind it hides what is in front, adding a playful quality that only reveals its full shape as you walk around it”.

Hypetex CEO Marc Cohen said: “It is fantastic to receive this award for our first-ever design product. We believe that Hypetex is set to revolutionise the way carbon fibre is used in design and across a broad range of industries.”
